The Lone Magnolia Bloom

The First and Only Bloom this year.

The back patio area at my new apartment building—Magnolia Square—is lined on the back end with Lilac bushes laden with fragrant blossoms. The ground cover bordering the edges is greening and the perennials are reaching to the sun. At the far end stands a magnolia tree with one bloom, yes only one, in deep pink profusion silhouetted against the sky.

Did you know the magnolia tree only starts to flower after ten years of growth. It starts with one or two flowers at first, then as each year passes more and more will appear each spring till the tree branches are barely seen. And most peculiar the bare branches fill with blossoms long before the leaves unfurl.

This lone flower reminds me of my writing journey. Long before “If They’d Only Known” had reached the soon-to-be published stage an idea was planted in my brain. The twig became a tree. But it’s taken many years to thicken the trunk of my foundation: to hone the craft, to cultivate the story, and ripen the characters. Then and only then did the blossoms appear. Slowly at first just as the Magnolia Square tree but with time, patience and a willingness to persevere my book has unfolded from a root idea to a blossoming tree about to be published.

Any journey on this crazy road called life begins with a first. A first step, a first bloom, a first word. Begin your adventure today.
